New leadership of the Judicial Council elected
On the 28th of October, the first meeting of the new Judicial Council took place, during which the new leadership of the Judicial Council was elected. Dr Danguolė Bublienė, President of the Supreme Court of Lithuania, was unanimously elected President of the Judicial Council by secret ballot.
"I believe that in these next four years of work of the new Judicial Council, the three key areas of work, i.e. cooperation, communication and quality, should be further strengthened. The judicial community needs to be strong, open, innovative, not afraid of challenges and criticism. Close cooperation between the judiciary and the constitutional authorities is crucial to resolving certain systemic issues. We need constant dialogue, diplomacy and consistent work", said Dr. D. Bublienė, the newly elected President of the Judicial Council.
The President of the Court of Appeal of Lithuania, Nerijus Meilutis, was unanimously elected as the Vice-Chairman of the Judicial Council, and the President of the District Court of Vilnius, Viktorija Šelmienė, will act as the Secretary of the Judicial Council.
The Judicial Council is the executive body of self-government of the judiciary, which ensures the independence of the courts and judges. It consists of 17 judges. The Council's term of office is four years, and judges may be elected for a maximum of two consecutive terms.
The Council also acts as an advisory voice to the President in the appointment, promotion, transfer and dismissal of judges.
