Supreme Court of Lithuania starts hearings in Lithuania's January 13 case

The cassation procedure concerning the judgment of 27 March 2019 of the Vilnius Regional Court and the judgment of 31 March 2021 of the Court of Appeal of Lithuania in the January 13 case is conducted in the Supreme Court of Lithuania. The Vilnius Regional Court (first instance court) and the Court of Appeal of Lithuania (second instance court) have convicted sixty-seven individuals of crimes against humanity (treatment of persons prohibited under international law) and war crimes (killing of persons protected under international humanitarian law; causing bodily harm to, torture or other inhuman treatment of persons protected under international humanitarian law or violation of protection of their property; prohibited military attack; use of prohibited means of warfare) for their involvement in the Soviet aggression on 13 January 1991 in Vilnius.

As mentioned above, in the large-scale criminal case concerning crimes against humanity and war crimes, sixty-seven persons were convicted by the first instance court. Sixty-one appeals were received at second instance. Sixteen cassation appeals were received in the Supreme Court of Lithuania, thirteen thereof were accepted.

Court hearings will be held at the Supreme Court of Lithuania on:

  • 2 March, 2022, 9 a.m.
  • 3 March, 2022, 9 a.m.
  • 9 March, 2022, 9 a.m.
  • 10 March, 2022, 9 a.m.

Representatives of media and any other members of public are invited to observe the hearings at the premises of the Supreme Court of Lithuania (the hearings will be held partly remotely).
